What type of exfoliant is best for your skin?

There is an art to skin care.  Finding balance is key, and routine exfoliation is essential in order to maintain a fresh, bright complexion.  When searching for the best exfoliant to compliment your skin type it is wise to pay attention to the differences among exfoliants.  Below is a list of some of the exfoliants we use at Face & Body Suite.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) soften strong, defining lines and reduce wrinkles.  Derived from milk, sugars, fruits, and nuts, water soluble AHAs gently dissolve the intercellular bonds that make old, dead skin cells stick to the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin).  AHAs are best when used on thickened, sun-damaged skin.

Glycolic Acid is an AHA derived from sugar.  It is the smallest AHA molecule.  This small molecular size allows for deeper penetration into the skin’s service.  Glycolic acid improves skin texture and appearance by diminishing blackheads, reducing wrinkles, acne scarring, hyper pigmentation, and actinic keratosis.  As glycolic acid is an extremely effective exfoliant, it can also be very drying to the skin.

Lactic Acid is derived from milk and sugar.  It is an AHA that is made up of larger molecules, allowing for slower penetration into the skin.  Lactic acid is known to be more gentle than glycolic acid, and is often used to increase hydration while helping to diminish pigmentation.

Citric Acid is derived from citrus fruits and is also known as Vitamin C.  This AHA serves as an antioxidant to the skin, helping to diminish cell-damaging free radicals.  Vitamin C brightens the skin and stimulates collagen production.

Mandelic Acid is ideal for delicate and sensitive skin types.  Mandelic acid is derived from bitter almond.  It is made of larger molecules that allow for slow and even penetration.  Anti fungal properties also make mandelic acid ideal for acne and pigmentation.

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), also known as Salicylic Acid, is an exfoliant with oil soluble properties.  BHA is able to penetrate through sebum and into the pore to clear out dead skin cells.  Because this BHA also contains anti-inflammatory properties, Rosacea and oily skin types will benefit from salicylic acid use.

Each of these exfoliants are effective at resurfacing the skin.  In order to protect your fresh complexion, it is extremely important to apply sunscreen as your skin will become more sensitive to sun damage.

The Bt-Micro Ultrasonic Exfoliation

The Bt-Micro Ultrasonic Exfoliation is a facial treatment device that uses millions of tiny vibrations to gently lift and release dead skin cells and impurities.  On the flip side it uses millions of tiny vibrations to press nourishing treatment products into the dermis, the layer of skin beneath the surface.  This tool will help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, decongest and clarify acne-prone skin, firm and plump the skin, and reduce pore size.     The Bt-Micro is used in our Bt-Cocktail Facial and Ultrasonic Express Facial.

Refresh your beautiful face with Bio-Brasion!

Microdermabrasion techniques have been used for thousands of years.  Ancient Egyptians even used special types of sand paper to resurface the skin.  As a result of this long lineage of knowledge, skin abrasion systems have vastly improved over the years.  The first microdermabrasion machine was developed in 1985, and has since become one of the most popular forms of skin care treatments.       The goal of microdermabrasion is to mechanically slough away the outermost layer of skin.  In turn, skin cells are rejuvenated to reveal a brighter, healthier complexion.  The newest form of microdermabrasion is the Wet/Dry Microdermabrasion system: Bio-Brasion.     Bio-Brasion is one of the most effective forms of skin exfoliation systems on the market.  The Bio-Brasion machine is equipped with five diamond tips.  Each tip varies in coarseness.  This allows for custom exfoliation according to skin type.  Combined with a chemical exfoliant, a diamond tip is passed across the face three times.  A gentle suction during this process helps to remove impurities and increase blood flow to the epidermis, encouraging skin cell turnover and collagen production.  The Bio-Brasion system is designed for all skin types, including sensitive.  Hyper pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and congested skin will benefit beautifully from the Bio-Brasion Treatment.  Check out this article showcasing Bio-Brasion!     Bio-Brasion is used in our Bio-Brasion w/ Aquafuse Facial, as well as in our Customized Facial upon request.  When looking to target specific skin concerns it is best to receive 4 consecutive Bio-Brasion Treatments.  It is then recommended to receive Bio-Brasion Treatments on a monthly basis.

Get a facial. Follow your dreams.

When you're giving it everything you’ve got on a daily basis, it’s important to make a conscious effort to find the time to take care of yourself regularly.  Receiving a facial is one of the best ways to give yourself that tender, loving care.

Facials are truly amazing.  This hands-on approach to skin care tones the facial muscles, improves blood circulation, encourages collagen production, deep cleans pores, evens out skin tone, and gives the face a healthy glow.  In turn, your central nervous system becomes calm; thus minimizing your response to daily stressors and increasing your overall self-confidence.

During each facial appointment at Yogaface & Body Spa, you will receive a thorough skin analysis.  The results of this analysis will then help us to decide which style of exfoliation is most appropriate for your skin type or condition.  Your treatment will also include a specific mask, facial massage, and moisturizer.  After your treatment, you will receive a list of skin care product recommendations tailored to fit your specific needs.

Facial treatments are beneficial to all ages and skin types, and are most effective when received on a monthly basis.  Taking the time to learn what is truly best for your skin is enlightening, and in some cases, life-changing.  When you feel confident in your skin, the sky’s the limit!
